Prayer Prescription for This Date

PRAYER Rx --- July 4

Dear Lord, as we observe our nation's Independence Day this July 4th, let us all consider Benjamin Franklin's statement, given in 1787 when the Continental Congress was deadlocked. He stood and addressed George Washington, saying: "Sir, we have not hitherto once thought of humbly appealing to the Father of Lights to illuminate our understanding. In the beginning of the contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible to danger, we had daily prayers in this room for divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard and graciously answered. ... Do we imagine that we no longer need His assistance? I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see in this truth, that God governs the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice,* is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? ... We have been assured that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.** -- I firmly believe this." ... Lord, forgive us our arrogance as a nation for thinking that we can survive our present or build a future without You.

In Jesus' name we pray.

Amen.

     * (Matt. 10:29)   ** (Psalm 127:1)
